Early rug hookers would take ideas from what they saw around them. On the coast of Maine, you would see a sail boat at sea, a simple log cabin with smoke coming from its chimney, a pine tree, etc. The alternating square boxes between the cabin and flower are basic "hit or miss patterns". The early rug hookers realized that they could use scraps of material (even old clothing!) to fill these spaces.
